Grants & Support

Support sustains university competitiveness

WARF’s careful stewardship ensures significant support for the university through an annual base grant, department royalty shares and special grants as resources allow.

Our base grant keeps the cycle of innovation turning by supporting student and faculty recruitment and retention, the Fall Research Competition and other initiatives. This grant is administered by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education in partnership with WARF.

We provide a share of royalties to the departments of faculty inventors and also provide additional grants to UW–Madison to support important initiatives such as D2P and the UW2020: WARF Discovery Initiative. In addition, UW–Madison and WARF leaders consider requests for special grants as circumstances allow.

WARF also supports the university in other ways by providing patenting and licensing services, payments to inventors, and other services including management of department trusts and donor funds as well as management of the Town Center and Discovery Building.

“WARF’s generous support for the Fall Competition and for many other initiatives of UW–Madison gives our university a significant margin of excellence that propels innovation, creativity and discovery by faculty, students and staff,” says Marsha Mailick, vice chancellor for research and graduate education.
