Conjugated Nonadecadienoic Acid (CNA) Reduces Body Fat and Inhibits LPL Activity

The Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) is seeking commercial partners interested in developing a method of using conjugated nonadecadienoic acid (CNA) to inhibit LPL activity.
OVERVIEWReducing fat accumulation in adipocytes is often a desired goal in both human and veterinary medicine. Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) provides numerous helpful physiological effects, including the inhibition of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity and the prevention of fat accumulation.
THE INVENTIONUW-Madison researchers have developed a method of using conjugated nonadecadienoic acid (CNA) to inhibit LPL activity in humans or other animals. CNA is a 19 carbon, free fatty acid with a pair of conjugated double bonds. Its biological effects on the metabolism of body fat are similar to those of CLA.

To inhibit LPL activity, an agent containing CNA and at least one derivative of CNA is administered to an animal. In addition to controlling body fat in animals, CNA also acts to inhibit cyclooxygenase activity and platelet aggregation.
  • May be useful for controlling body fat in humans and other animals
  • May be useful for preventing or treating diseases related to platelet aggregation, such as arteriosclerosis, inflammation, or stroke
  • Reduces LPL activity and decreases lipid accumulation to the same, or possibly even a greater, degree as CLA
  • Provides means to inhibit cyclooxygenase activity in cells
  • Can be administered in a variety of forms
