A Multiple-Eared Inbred Line of Corn for Production of “Baby Corn”

The Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) is seeking commercial partners interested in developing a variety of corn that produces a high yield of baby corn.
OVERVIEWBaby corn is produced by harvesting immature ears of corn just after the silks develop. Generally, corn plants produce from one to three ears per plant.
THE INVENTIONUW-Madison researchers have developed a variety of corn that produces a high yield of baby corn. This homozygous, phenotypically stable variety, called W701BC, produces 15 or more ears per plant in good conditions. Additionally, at approximately three feet tall, this variety is relatively short and therefore easier to harvest by hand.
