Meet the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s
Joshua Coon
Professor of Biomolecular Chemistry

Research area Facilitating the expedient, comprehensive analysis of proteins and metabolites by innovating new mass spectrometric technologies and applying these techniques to advance biomedical research.

What excites you about your work?

“I get to work with smart people to identify problems and imagine creative solutions–and work with the students and scientists in my research group to try out ideas. Even if an idea doesn’t work, the anticipation of wondering what we’ll learn, depending on whether or not it works, is exciting. It keeps my mind focused on what is possible and keeps me thinking about new ways to solve important problems.”

What do you hope to achieve?

“I’m in the department of biomolecular chemistry and at the Morgridge Institute, and I think of myself as a technologist. I’m interested in building tools and using them to solve problems. We can learn about biological systems and contribute to science, and we can also create a new technology tool and get it into the hands of everyone in the world who’s doing science. When we do that, we can influence science by giving the whole world a tool they couldn’t use before, and that could help address a whole range of problems in human health. It’s interesting building technology that can broadly influence whole fields.”

Josh has unique vision into how complex analysis and instrumentation can be applied to how we harness biology to positively affect human health. His group offers elegant solutions that companies recognize as such.
