Meet the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s
Scott Sanders
Professor of Mechanical Engineering

Research area Developing optical sensors and instrumentation that help solve critical problems related to energy, manufacturing and human health.

What excites you about your work?

“I’m excited about collaborating with colleagues to use tools in our lab to measure important properties related to manufacturing, quantum computing, physics, chemistry, electrical engineering and nuclear reactors. The work is closely related to my background in combustion instrumentation, but now we’re doing larger, multidisciplinary projects with exciting IP and commercial potential. For example, we’re working on a sensor to detect hydrogen leaks, and we’re aiming to start a company with that technology. It’s rewarding to see my students get interested in a topic and then become leading experts on that topic.”

What do you hope to achieve?

“I like to give students a launchpad for their future. Ultimately, I do think it’s the people who are most important in my work. The relationships I get to form with all these people and seeing them go on to do really great things is the most exciting part, to me.

It is a privilege to work with Professor Sanders and to promote their technologies within industry.
