The Invention
UW-Madison researchers have developed a deterministic inverse planning framework for interstitial brachytherapy treatment planning. The tool allows joint optimization of catheter placement and dose producing a unified ex ante treatment plan. The invention mitigates the effects of catheter placement and migration uncertainty by incorporating into the optimization process a penalty related to surface dose gradient near organs at risk. Reducing surface dose gradients decreases the effect of minor deviations in catheter placement on the organs at risk.
