Regenerating and Renewing Heart Tissue – 2023 WARF Innovation Award Nominee

Meet the cell and regenerative biology team that has identified a protein that could regenerate heart tissue.

University of Wisconsin-Madison Asst. Prof. Ahmed Mahmoud, Prof. Timothy Kamp and Assoc. Prof. Youngsook Lee have interests in heart development and adult cardiac disease, the leading cause of death and hospitalizations in the world. This team has discovered a protein, LRRC10, that activates heart renewal and regeneration in animal models. The discovery could lead to a therapeutic that restores cardiac structure and function in human heart failure patients.
