Research area Leveraging machine learning for opportunistic screening in abdominal CT; clinical evaluation of deep learning tools for computer vision and image analysis; and advancing methodologies, such as federated learning, to enable secure and large-scale computational solutions in medical imaging. Collaborates across academic departments and with the UW Health system, enhancing the integration of informatics and imaging research to address pressing challenges in health care. Collaborated with radiologist Perry Pickhardt and biostatistician Michael Kattan to develop a new screening tool to predict an individual’s biological age and likelihood of developing age-related diseases.
What excites you about your work?
“Medical imaging is an amazing tool that can generate so much information about a patient. CT scans, in particular, provide tremendous high resolution and quantitative images, though they require small amounts of ionizing radiation to acquire. We’re working on methods and tools to make the most of that information and potentially save a need for repeated or additional scans, providing patients and their care teams with information they might not otherwise get. Everybody wins if you provide more information, and you can do it without additional imaging.”
What do you hope to achieve?
“I hope to take these methods out of the academic domain and see what they can do in the real world. Will they influence the way people get care and help people make healthier decisions?”
Prof. Garrett is utilizing AI in medical imaging to advance diagnostics in a way that saves time and resources and provides superior information to patients and medical staff. We’re thrilled to continue supporting the translation of his innovations into practical health care tools.
