Meet the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s
Lonie Salkowski
Professor of Radiology

Research area Salkowski’s interest in teaching from medical students to colleagues has developed into a research pursuit, specifically in curriculum development and the mechanisms by which students learn and assimilate concepts. Salkowski’s first patent with WARF is an assessment program used to provide radiology residents an opportunity to independently interpret screening mammograms within a simulation setting.

What excites you about your work?

“It’s exciting to see an idea you have come to fruition and then have residents use the system and learn from the feedback. It is great to see the residents taking the experience seriously and finding it valuable. This is especially true of the residents who have had serial simulation sessions and see their progress. It is rewarding to me if I can improve someone’s training and learning.”

What do you hope to achieve?

“My goal is to improve resident education in breast imaging, making them better prepared to go out into the world and take care of patients. Ideally, I would like to export this system to other radiology residency programs to help other residents prepare for independent screening mammogram reading.”

Lonie is improving how radiology students understand complex medical imaging and results with computer-based learning simulations. Her interactive AI tools set the next generation of radiologists up for success.
