The Invention

UW-Madison researchers have identified novel phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) enzymes that are activated, rather than inhibited, by downstream phenylpropanoids, most notably caffeic acid. When these genes are engineered into plants that express another gene that enhances absorption of atmospheric carbon, there is an increase in production of phenylpropanoids.
