The Invention

 A UW-Madison researcher has designed a pulsed power buffer (PBB) circuit integrated with a conventional solid state Marx generator (SSMG). This operates by redistributing the pulsating power from the main DC capacitor to an auxiliary capacitor which can have a large voltage swing: ideally 100% as it is not directly connected to the main discharging path. The concept is similar to active power decoupling techniques widely used in applications like electric vehicle onboard chargers, photovoltaic inverters, and universal power supplies. PPB approaches have been explored in some other pulsed power applications; however, these are not optimized to extract PPB’s full potential. This PPB integrated with a Marx generator achieves a high-power density SSMG that can operate at extreme temperatures (>150°C) with full control of the HV pulse voltage for extended and regulated long flat-top. For conventional Marx generator, it is not possible to regulate the output HV pulse and inherently it droops over the discharging cycle.
