UW-Madison researchers have designed a new process to produce vitrimers that transforms traditional vinyl monomers used for thermoplastics by the formation of dynamic imine bonds. Vitrimers are a class of materials that embody the best of properties that thermosets have to offer with the reprocessibility of thermoplastics. This innovation lays out a single step chemistry that involves simultaneous polymerization and crosslinking to form imine bonds through the reaction of isocyanide with a propagating free radical chain end. This chemistry should allow for superior thermo-mechanical properties, such as high glass transition temperature Tg, excellent creep resistance due to the strong imine bond, and good processibility without loss of modulus above the topological freezing transition temperature Tv owing to the fast kinetics of the exchange reaction.
