The Invention

UW-Madison researchers have developed a method for using an optical displacement tracker in conjunction with an inertial measurement unit (IMU – gyroscope and accelerometer) to correct for slip events in kinematic tracking. In this technique, time synchronized sensor fusion between the IMU and an optical displacement sensor is used to directly correct the full kinematics during slip events. This method is low-cost and has a minimal form factor, allowing for easy integration with existing IMUs.
