Cold Storage Solution for Organs and Tissues Including Whole Eyes and Methods of Use Thereof
WARF: P240239US02
Inventors: Robert Nickells
The Invention
A UW-Madison researcher has developed an optimal storage solution for preserving whole eyes prior to transplantation. Harvesting a donor eye requires severing the optic nerve. By definition, this initiates the intrinsic apoptotic program in retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). The tissue preservation solution was supplemented with reagents designed to attenuate or block apoptosis in RGCs allowing them to survive the harvesting and prepare them to regenerate their axons.
