Methods of Treating Epilepsy and Reducing the Incidence of Seizures

The Invention
UW-Madison researchers have developed a method for stopping seizures in patients suffering from acquired epilepsy. The treatment strategy utilizes Tofacitinib, a JAK/STAT inhibitor currently prescribed to treat rheumatoid arthritis. The researchers used a mouse model for status epilepticus. Once the mice started having seizures, the researchers began IP injection of the drug for 10 days which led to nearly complete amelioration of the seizures. After ceasing treatment, the researchers observed that not only did the treated mice not suffer from seizures for two months and counting, but their cognitive behavior and memory improved. This is the holy grail of epilepsy treatments.
