L. Reuteri Engineered to Release Recombinant Products Following Prophage Activation and Subsequent Phage-Mediated Lysis
WARF: P250218US01

Inventors: Jan Peter Van Pijkeren

The Invention

A UW-Madison researcher has engineered Lactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri VPL1014) to express a recombinant gene from the chromosome or plasmid. The gene product can be rodent-, monkey-, or human-derived, that is accumulated inside the cytoplasm. During gastrointestinal transit, environmental triggers activate prophages that naturally reside inside the cell leading to the production of phage particles, lysis and subsequent release of the recombinant therapeutic.
